What is a sat?

A sat, short for satoshi, is the smallest unit of Bitcoin. One Bitcoin is 100,000,000 sats, so one sat is 0.00000001 BTC.

Why small buyers count in sats

A regular amount, say $10 or $25 a week, buys only a small fraction of a whole Bitcoin. Written in Bitcoin that looks like 0.0004 BTC, a number that is easy to misread. Written in sats it is 40,000 sats, a whole number you can follow from week to week. That is the whole reason the unit exists for savers: it makes small, regular amounts readable.

What a sat is not

A sat is a unit of account, not a separate coin and not a product. BitcoinSaving is an educational calculator: it replays past prices and does the arithmetic, and it does not buy, sell or hold Bitcoin.
