Stacking sats: start thinking in satoshis

"I can't afford a bitcoin" is the most common reason people never start, and it rests on a unit error. One bitcoin divides into 100,000,000 satoshis, sats for short, the way a dollar divides into cents. Nobody buys a bitcoin. Everybody buys sats, and small amounts of them, on a schedule, add up to a number worth looking at.

Try it on your own numbers

The BitcoinSaving app replays any amount, rhythm and start year on real prices back to 2010, with charts for your average cost and your stretches under water. The iPhone beta opens soon.

The reframing matters more than the arithmetic. Watching 0.0012 BTC wobble feels like nothing. Watching a stack grow from 800,000 sats to 1,000,000 sats feels like progress, because it is the same progress in a unit your brain can count. Milestones help: 100,000 sats is a first rung, 1,000,000 sats (0.01 BTC) is the one most stackers aim at first, and at today's price a $25 weekly buy reaches it in roughly 33 weeks.

What $25 a week actually stacked

Promises are cheap; here is a real run. $25 every week from the first Monday of January 2023 to today is 200 buys and $5,000 spent, recomputed on the same daily prices our calculator uses (Coinbase daily prices, via btcdollarcostaverage.com):

Notice the average cost. The plan bought all through 2023, when Bitcoin traded mostly between $20,000 and $40,000, so most of the stack was built at prices that felt broken at the time. That is the quiet mechanic of stacking: the weeks when buying feels pointless are the weeks that lower your average. The weeks when it feels exciting add the fewest sats per dollar.

How to start stacking, practically

Pick an amount you would not miss if it halved, because at some point it will, on paper. Make it automatic if your exchange allows a recurring buy, and check the fees first: a $25 buy with a 2 percent fee loses more to friction than to most price moves, and our fees guide shows what platforms actually take. Count your progress in sats, review it monthly rather than daily, and run your own pace in the DCA calculator before you commit to a number.
